Helping Hands Grants
The APF Helping Hands Grant Program encourages medical students to participate in community mental health service activities, particularly those focused on underserved populations. Programs are designed by the medical students and conducted under the supervision of medical faculty.
The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine was awarded a 2011 Helping Hands Grant! Medical student Rachel Robitz is the student author and the faculty advisor is Dr. Aurora Bennett. The grant will fund a project that is taking place in collaboration with Off the Streets, a CBO that works with women coming out of a life of addiction and prostitution, many of whom also have co-morbid mental illness. The project includes development and implementation of an educational curriculum. The curriculum will be co-led by a medical student and an Off the Streets graduate (living with mental illness) co-leader who will educate them on women's health and mental health subject matter.
The OPPF congratulates Ms. Robitz and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and thanks Dr. Metting and the American Psychiatric Foundation for this exciting educational opportunity!
