APA
Restructures Fellowship
Fellowship
is a national honor awarded by the APA to psychiatrists who
have made and continue to make significant contributions to
the profession and the community. Excellence, not mere competency,
is the hallmark of the potential Fellow.
Starting
in 2002, Fellowship will be restructured into two categories:
FELLOW:
Members who meet the following criteria:
* Five consecutive years as an APA General Member
* ABPN, RCPS, or AOA certification
* Three letters of recommendation from APA Fellows
* Concurrence of the OPA
DISTINGUISHED
FELLOW:
Members who meet the following criteria:
* Eight years as an APA General Member
* Primary identification must be psychiatry for those in combined
fields (e.g. psychiatry and pediatrics)
* Significant contributions in at least 5 of the areas listed
below:
o Certification by the ABPN, RCPS,
or AOA;
o Involvement in the work of the
district branch or other components of the APA;
o Involvement in other medical
and professional organizations;
o Participation in non-compensated
mental health and medical activities of social significance;
o Participation in community activities
unrelated to income-producing activities;
o Clinical contributions;
o Administrative contributions;
o Teaching contributions;
o Scientific and scholarly publications
* Three letters of recommendation from current APA Fellows.
(Note:
Those members who are currently APA Fellows will be automatically
upgraded to Distinguished Fellow. You do not need to take any
action.)
The
process of nomination for either Fellow or Distinguished Fellow
starts at the District Branch. All eligible members are notified
by the OPA of their basic eligibility (Fellow: five years APA
membership; Distinguished Fellow: eight years APA membership),
along with complete instructions. You are advised to contact
your local Chapter if you are interested in applying.
Further information will be published in the newsletter and
posted on this website.
